UK to Implement Age Verification Measures for Pornography Websites

New legislation announced by the British Government will require pornography websites serving the UK to verify the age of their users. Set to be enforced by April 2018, these measures are part of the broader Digital Economy Act.

The new law mandates that anyone in the UK wishing to access online pornography must demonstrate that they are an adult. Porn sites will be expected to implement age-verification technology similar to that used by gambling sites. Failure to comply could result in substantial fines.

Will Gardner, CEO of the internet safety charity Childnet, supports the move, highlighting its importance in shielding young people from potentially harmful content. A study in 2016 by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) found that nearly half of 11- to 16-year-olds surveyed had viewed online pornography, underscoring the need for such measures.

The Digital Economy Act also aims to tackle other digital issues, such as the use of internet bots by ticket scalpers. These bots often buy up large quantities of tickets to entertainment events and resell them at inflated prices. The new Act will criminalize more actions associated with ticket scalping.

Digital Minister Matt Hancock, who initiated the commencement order for the Act, stated that the legislation would start with age verification for porn, address ticket scalping, enhance subtitling on catch-up TV, and improve internet connectivity in rural areas. Hancock emphasized that the Digital Economy Act aims to create a robust, secure, and interconnected economy, enhancing consumer support and child protection online, and facilitating the transformation of government services.
